2. Descanso Gardens

The Descanso Gardens is a 150 hectare park made up of various gardens, woodland and chaparral. More than 750,000 visitors come here every year to explore the nine different themed gardens. A highlight are the 40,000 camellia bushes that have been part of the gardens for decades. Blooms abound in the 50-acre California oak forest from October through March. The best time for the 4,000 roses in the rosarium is from April to December.

3. Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden features 300 acres of trees, shrubs, flowers and historic buildings divided into several large areas. The special African and Australian gardens are particularly impressive. The park is also home to a waterfall, prehistoric forest, spring-fed Lake Baldwin, research center, greenhouses and several historic buildings.

4. South Coast Botanical Garden

The South Coast Botanic Garden features over 2,500 species of plants over 87 hectares with an emphasis on drought tolerant plants. The "Jewel of the Peninsula" is located on the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula, just 10 miles south of Los Angeles Airport. The garden has a wide variety of plants, some from as far away as Australia, the Mediterranean and South Africa.
